Football Star ends Broadcast Career

Tom Larscheid had his ace on Wednesday. Vancouver Canuck hockey fans had their ace for most of the last 33 years.

It is the end of an era for the National Hockey League club and broadcasting in Vancouver as the Team 1040 is replacing Larscheid with analyst Dave Tomlinson on its radio broadcasts next season.

An under-sized running back from California who moved to Vancouver to play football in 1962 and never left, Larscheid's remarkable reign over the airwaves here is unlikely to be repeated either in duration or style.

He was the colour-man on Vancouver hockey broadcasts for all but four NHL seasons since 1977, and for more than a generation of hockey fans Larscheid's insight and instincts provided a blunt barometer of the team's performance – good or bad.

“When you have a job you've loved each and every day, you're sorry to give it up,” Larscheid said late Wednesday. “But the simple reality is I'm 70 years old and it's time to pass the baton. It will be strange not to be up there in my perch during hockey season, but I've had a pretty good run.

“I'm grateful to the listeners and honoured to have worked with three of the very best play-by-play men in the business in Jim Robson, Jim Hughson and John Shorthouse. And Rick Ball is going to be right up there, too. I always called it the way I saw it and I had a lot of fun doing it. My only regret is I never got to say: 'The Vancouver Canucks are Stanley Cup champions.'”

Larscheid said 1040 has been terrific to him and he leaves with no hard feelings after the station told him recently it was going with Tomlinson, a 41-year-old from North Vancouver who was a kid when Larscheid and Robson were often better than the hockey team they broadcast.

Tomlinson has been filling in for Larscheid and working other assignments for 1040 after completing a 15-season playing career in hockey.

Larscheid got a head start on his retirement Wednesday when he had a hole-in-one playing golf with Shorthouse.

He looks forward to a lot more golf and time with his wife, Lesley.

At the radio station's invitation, Larscheid will work one final game with Shorthouse, the Oct. 9 season-opener against Los Angeles that starts the Canucks' 40th anniversary season. The hockey team will go the next 40 years without Larscheid.

Tommy was nothing but class to work with. It might have only been for a few years, but we had FUN together, hanging with our air 'team'.

I respect him and I have a soft spot for his special daughter, Candace.

Tommy was an incredible football talent and love him or hate him, he made it a 100% effort every game. His enthusiasm and understanding of the mind of the Pro was compelling.

Never saw him play, but I hear he was amazing in College, would've certainly had a better Lions career if not for injuries. Obviously I worked with him for many years, we didn't always see things
from the exact same perspective, he was more partisan than I ever was, let's put it that way. I truly admired his passion, enthusiasm and the joy he brought to what he was doing. An intense guy,
but also with a very good heart. We had some enjoyable times working together, and I felt like he went out of his way to help me too. He will be missed for sure on the broadcasts, and can
be very proud of his career as a hockey and football commentator. Pretty unique guy, and by the way, this isn't a eulogy, he's retiring not expiring. lp

Tommy was at QM when I finished my time at CJOR and went to the Whitecaps......he wasn't my cup of tea as a sportscaster, and later with his bingo, bongo stuff, drove me nuts.......but I'll tell you this.....for a guy who was a damned good football player, injured....turned to football broadcasting.....and eventually hockey broadcasting....despite his homeliness, I have to give the man credit....Mr. Larsheid, you have given sport your all....you have given sports radio your all....and for that I respect your absolute and total effort, sir. May you sit back and enjoy retirement to the fullest. My vote goes to Tom Larsheid as the next member of the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame as a broadcaster personified.

Best wishes to Tom.

Along with being a fabulous broadcaster, Tom could sell.

Recall in the early 80's taking Tom on a Sales call out to see Claude & Ray at C & R Carpets in Surrey.

Our pitch was a major sponsorhip for the newly aquired BC Lions Football broadcast rights on 14CFUN.

After the hand-shakes, Tom got down to business and within 20 minutes, we left their boardroom with the contracts signed and a commitment for $45,000 for the season.

My role as the Rep, layout the Sponsorship package and sit back watching Mr Sales Guy (Tom) go to work in closing the business.

His high-energy both On-Air and in Sales was incredible.

Thanks Tom

Regards,

Rob Collins
