Former CKWX Open Liner Barrie Clark has died.

Postby CubbyCam » Mon Mar 19, 2018 6:40 am

Received this sad news in a note from former colleague Jim Morrison:

"Hi friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I send along the news that our friend Barrie Clark passed away Friday.

He went peacefully at the age of 86 after a short battle with cancer. At his request there will be no service, although many of us will certainly ignore that request and hoist a glass or two in his memory.

RIP, Mr. Clark. We had some awesome times!

Jim Morrison"

Barrie's bio from www.vancouverbroadcasters.com

Announcer CKOV Kelowna 1949; CHEX Peterborough ON 1951; news: CJOR Vancouver 1952; Reuters News Agency London UK 1954; talk-show host: CKLG Vancouver 1955; CKWX Vancouver 1956; CHAN-TV Vancouver 1961; CKWX & CBUT Vancouver 1962; Councillor District of North Vancouver 1963; elected to the BC Legislature 1966; Rentalsman BC Attorney General's Ministry 1973-76; talk-show host: CKNW 1977-86; CJOR 1988; CKOV Kelowna 1989-99; Councillor Kelowna City Council 1999-2008
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Godspeed, Barry ... Rest in Peace...

Claimed to be the only person to have sued Jimmy Pattison successfully for wrongful dismissal from radio... twice...

Private-sector broadcaster and politician at two levels of government. And public service as Rentalsman (the first??) to boot! A work life well lived.

Hopefully an encapsulation of Barrie’s journey will rate more than a few inches, if that, in The Vancouver Sun and The Province. Ideally, The Gobe And Mail will assign obit specialist Tom Hawthorn to take a deeper look. No doubt plenty of anecdotes, including—if I recall—a workplace feud with a makeshift wall separating disputants.

I interviewed Barrie once for a story. He was a total gent, oozing class. Godspeed.

John, how well I remember the morning in August 1988 that Barrie stormed into George Madden's office to find out whether he had a job when he came back from holidays.

Wow, that's a neat factoid. Wonder if he won - both times? :)

He did have a great, deep, but soothing, voice for radio. Didn't know he was an MLA and a District of North Vancouver councillor. I liked him on Kelowna council, generally. :)

Quite sad to see him gone. ;)

Cheers,

From this morning's Broadcast Dialogue Sign-Offs:
Barrie Clark, 86, on Mar. 16, after a short battle with cancer. Clark got his start in broadcasting at CKOV Kelowna in 1949. From there he did stints at CHEX Peterborough, CJOR Vancouver, Reuters News Agency in London and then hosted various talk and television programming at CKLG, CKWX, CHAN-TV and CBUT Vancouver throughout the 1950s and early 60s. In 1963, he was elected as the city councillor for North Vancouver and three years later to the B.C. legislature, serving in the ministry of the Attorney General as the province’s first Rentalsman from 1973-76. Clark returned to talk radio in the late 70s, as a host on CKNW from 1977-86 and then at CJOR Vancouver and CKOV Kelowna. He re-entered politics in 1999, holding a city council seat in Kelowna until 2008.

In leafing through editions of the Vancouver Sun of the day (1961), I discovered Barrie's show on CHAN was the first CTV network programme that originated in Vancouver. He co-hosted with Jack Cullen, the music was supplied by Dal Richards and Dal's wife Lorraine sang. The problem was the network couldn't find a sponsor.
