I recall it was drummed into me not to date (see: no split infinitive) copy as far as the 'update/happening detail' would have been concerned. If it reflected on necessary background info, fine, but even then, avoid... radio is now/present.

IIRC, Broadcast News locally in Vancouver was great in this regard, and in a small operation, that meant rip-and-read when in a hurry was safe.

:-) Right on!

*Never* date your copy... and always write in the present or present perfect tense ... not in the past tense.

You're writing news... not history...

My latest prickle comes from TV anchors and radio readers, too: "PETRONAS."

It's Petro-nass. Not Petro-nus.

Muggles...

"Petronus" is a magic charm from "Harry Potter"... the primary protection against the Dementors and the Lethifolds, against which there is no other protection..
... "an incantation, which will work only if you are concentrating, with all your might, on a single, very happy memory."...

Expecto Patronum!!

Sorry to disappoint you... but Wikipedia has nothing to do with it...

Heard this morning from the lead story on the 8 am news:

" ... on the Japanese slopes of a Japanese volcano ...". Didn't realize that slopes had a nationality.

Anyone else hear this one on one of the 'NW newscasts today?

"Hong Kong police were lobbying tear gas canisters ...". "Lobbying" or "lobbing"? I hope I misheard but fear I didn't.

...heard a fart sound effect this afternoon. It was all part of the witty banter between sports guy and host. How is the CBC gonna compete with that?

The CBC could celebrate the 40th anniversary of Blazing Saddles and run audio clips from the campfire scene.

WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE!!! For me, the only phone call from an angry listener (over my own occasional incompetence) was following a 10pm rip and read... the first time I had ever seen a certain name in print. the name was Ramon Hnatyshyn. I felt like I had been shot. I cut a little slack now for others.

To the NW copy department: There is a commercial running for Mark's Pharmacy in Delta. The address given for Mark's is 120th and Scott Road in Delta.

Check a map and you'll discovery that Scott Road is actually 120th Street. There is no 120th and Scott. Mark's is actually at 80th and Scott.

And by the way, the commercial is for something happening on Fridays and Saturdays in November. It's now almost the third week of December.
