Industry Canada approves 3 Surrey South Asian FMs

Postby jon » Sun Oct 26, 2014 9:33 am

From Dan Sys' Canadian Radio News on Facebook:
3 LOW POWER SOUTH ASIAN STATIONS APPROVED IN SURREY, B.C.

Details are not available but while checking the updated Industry Canada database this morning I noticed 3 new low power stations for Surrey, B.C. have been authorized bypassing the usual CRTC procedures.

VF2686 - 89.3 - 15 watts - Amrit Bani Radio Ltd. 207-12830 80th Avenue Surrey, B.C.

VF2688 - 91.5 - 4 watts - Ravinder Singh Pannu 9400 Goreway Drive Brampton,ON

VF2689 - 106.9 - 41 watts (also Ravinder Singh Pannu).

Not sure if it's the same group, but Amrit Bani Radio operates a religious South Asian station based out of Birmingham, England:

Ravinder Singh Pannu operates several Ethnic cable TV stations across Canada as well as an SCMO FM station "Sur Saagar Radio" based out of Toronto:

I've asked Dan about transmitter location. As yet, Industry Canada has not published that information yet, but they have listed EHAAT information, which is probably the best indication of coverage for a given power.

15 watt 89.3 is 91.8 metres, or 300 feet. 4 watt 91.5 and 41 watt 106.9 are both 51.7 metres.

For comparison, Dan noted that BCIT's CFML-FM is only 12 watts but it "blankets the entire Lower Mainland from a transmitter located on the roof of a high rise in Metrotown" in Burnaby. At 144 feet that is less than half 89.3's EHAAT, and a bit less than the other two.

According to Industry Canada, The address of "Amrit Bani Radio Ltd." brings us to "Salt Spring Island Radio"
https://www.ic.gc.ca/app/scr/cc/CorporationsCanada/fdrlCrpDtls.html?corpId=6722873

And Salt Spring Island Radio is... the same owner from Radio Punjab, which used to be on KRPA 1110.

So the "Amrit Bani Radio" is possible the re-birth of "Radio Punjab" , IMO.

Just scanning the FM band from my Surrey Centre location and am picking up programming on 89.3 running test announcements and identifying itself as VF2686 in Delta, BC.

Assuming it is VF2686 - 89.3 - 15 watts - Amrit Bani Radio Ltd. 207-12830 80th Avenue Surrey, B.C.

Armpit Radio has a fairly decent signal into New Westminster. Probably in an uptown or Quayside high rise the signal would be 100%.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Oh, really?!

Um, the tests must be fairly haphazard as quick checks a few times a day in recent days on the Kingsway Ridge beside Central Park have shown no signs of a signal. 128th and 80th as a registered office is in Surrey, so exactly where in Delta remains a question mark.

The REC site shows the transmitter being located near 80th Avenue & 119th Street in Delta (enlarge the map):
http://fccdata.org/?facid=&call=VF2686& ... type=LICEN
This could be where the studios are located too. The city of license is Surrey though according to the I/C database.

Thanks, Dan.

With overall height above ground at 50m, that would suggest a-top Chancellor Place, just west of Scott Road. It's a ~15-storey apartment building with a one-level commercial podium.

I can now hear South Asian music, but only in certain parts of the apartment, and strangely not close to the east-facing windows. The signal is hammered by CFVT/Vancouver Tourist Radio.
