Civic Election Coverage On Radio

Postby radiofan » Sat Nov 15, 2014 10:18 pm

Great election coverage on both News 1130 and CBC Radio One tonight.

Kudos to Jim Bennie and his crew at News 1130 and to Stephen Quinn and his crew at CBU!

Total thumbs down to BC's FORMER News Leader, CKNW, and their hum filled audio simulcast of BC 1. Doing TV on radio doesn't work, no matter who the host is.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Great job on KISS in Vernon covering the North Okanagan.

Watched the amateur hour on BC1 for a bit then went back to the Golf Channel.

What a joke NW has become. Not even a shadow of it's former self. How long til they shut down the newsroom and start running casts from BN?

Hal Davis must be spinning in his grave tonight.

What a disgrace that coverage this evening on CKNW. And I thought the hum was coming from interference from my Chromebook. Now it may have improved later on but I gave up around 9:15 pm. And as someone else has pointed out the BC1 coverage itself had a bit of an amateur quality. What has become of these former news power houses?

It takes money to do news properly... They're not willing to spend it...

Keep in mind that most people don't vote in civic elections and even if they do they are usually only interested in their community so it's a challenge covering all elections and keeping everyone interested, someone in Langley or Surrey couldn't care less of the Vancouver election and vice versa. So not sure of the payback for a couple of hours programming.

I'm not so sure about that Coolcat. There was tremendous regional interest in the Vancouver and Surrey elections. To be sure the voter turnout is well under 50%, although I believe Vancouver turnout was in excess of 40%. That is a terrific figure. I found people across Metro Vancouver to be more engaged in municipal politics than I've seen in a long time and people seemed to be much more aware of issues beyond their particular municipality.

One thing noticeable on the BC1 coverage from the Shaw Tower: 2 newspaper editors held their own and in many cases did a better job than some of the so-called broadcast professionals. Stars are born?
Some people here need to realize, at the end of the day, Shaw is the parent company of Corus Entertainment (CKNW) and Global BC and BC1. Therefore, you got employees from all outlets making an appearance on the coverage which was based in downtown Vancouver at the Shaw Tower. And yes, it's cheaper that way.

Agreed! The newspaper guys were MUCH better prepared than their radio or TV counterparts. Ted Field, IMO, being a notable exception.
Pretty sure everyone here knows who owns who - that is no excuse for what was presented, especially considering the news powerhouse NW once was.

Did Jim B. mention his own buddy Jack who failed to get defeated in his fourth term this century.

Oh well :yahoo:

In by a margin of just 33 votes... :-)

What are the chances of a three-time incumbent loosing... when there are just nine candidates vying for six seats?

... and how did two of those nine manage to get elected by acclamation?

Well done, Jack!

Two water councilors from the rural area - those two have there for 20 years :carrot:

Actually seven ran for four positions on regular council

But credible candidates - 5 for four seats

Elections are popularity contests and who knows how the numbers are tabulated inside the machine.

If you win you win if you lose - better luck next time. :occasion5:
