Why am I having "AM Stereo" déjà vu? :-)

So... What is the big difference between "HD" radio... and the digital radio that we were all told 25 years ago was going to be the next big thing? ...

Here's the CKNW promo link with a coverage map.

Note the promo uses the term "high definition". There is no "definition" for "high definition" when it comes to this. Instead, HD is simply a branding term, and a clever one at that, by the owner of the format.

Some of the show hosts are also touting a discount coupon for an HD radio for those without one in the car. This makes no sense. The coupon applies to tabletop radios. Replacing a radio in a recent model car is not a simple undertaking and is probably ill-advised. So, it seems the 'NW hosts charged with promoting the new HD signal don't really have a grasp on what they are dealing with.

"HD Radio" is a trademark owned by something called iBiquity ... apparently the result of a merger 15 years ago of USA Digital Radio and Lucent Digital Radio.

As a trademark developed by Lexicon Branding Inc. of Sausalito, California, the HD in "HD Radio" does not have any meaning on its own and does not stand for either "high definition" or "hybrid digital".

In AM radio, it stands for "horrible distortion" to adjacent channels.
