PD at CKNW and CHMJ

Postby kal » Sat May 07, 2016 9:46 pm

Apparently Larry Gifford has moved up from Interim PD to Senior PD for CKNW and CHMJ.

Just wondering why the all-traffic station actually needs a PD.

Is his new title now Programme Director... or Brand Manager?

If they'd hired someone just for that station, it would be a valid question. Someone needs to schedule shifts and interact with other departments.

I find it quite amazing that in a country the size of Canada and in a company the size of Corus there isn't a Canadian who has the ability or the smarts to run this once proud heritage radio station and get it back on the tracks before it freefalls into obscurity.

I hope you're paying him in Canadian dollars.

That post took longer than I thought. Probably would have been faster had he been Australian. And we'll ignore how this type of hire has an immediate positive economic effect.

I also find his appointment a disappointment. (No pun intended). There are plenty of Program/Brand Managers across Canada and an over-supply of them at CORUS alone. Why not give them a chance to elevate themselves in the company for which they've laboured? CORUS has Assistant PD's, PD's, Cluster PD's, Western PD's, Eastern PD's and National PD's. Some are AM or FM specialists! Surely there must have one of them capable of running what are, in effect, two talk stations!

I welcome American and Australian hires, provided, the USA and Australia also hire Canadians ! That said, Canadian broadcasters have benefited from hiring Americans and their expertise, from Don Shafer to Dave Van Horne, the list goes on and on. Canada benefits from immigration and new ideas, etc.
