Andy Walsh gets ready to sign off.

Postby Russ_Byth » Tue Jan 24, 2017 10:53 pm

Just heard my friend Andy Walsh is going to retire from radio. His last day on News 1130 will be Monday morning Feb 13. Family Day.
Andy's been in the biz since 1951 and was named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 2011. He has been doing the morning show on weekends for years.
It was an honour to work with this broadcasting legend and true Gentleman.
We will miss 'that voice'.
Happy Retirement Andy!

Truly one of Vancouver's Iconic broadcasters... and a pretty damn nice guy to boot! Enjoy the weekends Andy! :worthybow:

Russ sums it up. Andy's a kind, friendly person and always had a good word to say. The first thing he does when arriving at work at some ungodly hour is make coffee for everyone.
I know he'll miss being on the air because he loves it so much.

The end of an era. The dean of Vancouver newscasters. And what a duo when he and the late Brian Brenn worked together.

In a career, on-air broadcaster, where it is difficult not to have an oversized ego, Andy has "stuck it out" and still done a great job, when few others would not have quit in disgust.

Case in point: CHQM in the Summer of 1971. Andy did Weekday Morning News. Not positive that he actually had the title of News Director, but he was certainly the senior Newsman.

GM Bill Bellman hires Paul Taylor from Newsradio Canada, where he was Ottawa Bureau Chief, and names him News Director. Andy continues doing Morning News as Paul has no assigned News shift, splitting his time between News Director duties and Roving Reporter.

Shortly after I left, just shy of a year later, Paul is gone, too. And Andy becomes News Director.

During all of this, I never heard a bad work spoken about Andy.

There is no one like Andy Walsh on the air or off!

Andy and I worked together at CHQM AM & FM from 1970 until 1993 when the station was sold.

Stories above about Andy making coffee and running a shuttle service for co-workers ring true. There was never anything that was too much work for Andy. That includes hosting the Pope’s visit to Metro Vancouver! Always a gentle, class act.

Andy, I wish you nothing but the best in retirement. Spend more time with Bea and the kids.
