CORUS RADIO LAUNCHES NEW LATE-NIGHT NATIONAL TALK SHOW
“THE SHIFT WITH DREX”
Vancouver, Canada – Beginning Monday, January 22, The Shift with Drex will hit the airwaves on talk radio stations across Canada.

Hosted by Justin “Drex” Wilcomes, this late-night program will offer a fresh take on the day’s biggest headlines and the untold stories that matter to listeners. Packed full of interviews with newsmakers, columnists and celebrities, The Shift with Drex will be a go-to source for late night banter and lively debate with content driven by its audience. From listener calls to comments online, Drex will interact with audiences every night, to get them involved in the conversation.

“It’s stories, it’s opinion, it’s culture, it’s irreverent and it’s Canadian,” said Troy Reeb, Senior Vice-President, Global News and Corus Radio. “The Shift with Drex will tap into the common humour, pride and honesty that pulls our country together.”

“I’m looking forward to a fun ride ahead hosting a show where the phone lines are always open,” said Wilcomes, Host of The Shift with Drex. “My goal is to challenge the status-quo by delivering a program that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking.”

Known for his witty candor, insatiable curiosity and off-the-cuff style, Drex has been on radio airwaves since 1993. He joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Triple J in Sydney in 1995 and was one of the youngest radio announcers to host a national radio show. In 2001, he ventured into commercial radio, working as a program director and host across several stations in Australia, before immigrating to Canada in 2009 and making a name for himself in British Columbia radio. Most recently, Drex has been co-host of the weekday afternoon show Steele & Drex alongside Lynda Steele on 980 CKNW Vancouver.

The Shift with Drex will air at the following times:

980 CKNW
Vancouver 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. PT (LIVE), 2 – 5 a.m. (REPEAT)

I'd bet all my money that it's just the days stories rehashed.

Not that there's a connection or anything, but funny that the official announcement of Dreck's show comes on the day when the price of Corus hits into the region of being an all-time low of $8.88 (last quarter was nasty for Global, with TV audience off by something like 9% on year-to-year basis, causing the shares to plummet 17% in value last Wednesday with the release of the latest financials).

So Dreck is known for his "witty candor, insatiable curiosity and off-the-cuff style". Wonder how long it took Reeb to come up with that line, thank goodness there are no requirements for truth in a press release.

Note that the show runs M-F Toronto time and hence Sunday to Thursday Vancouver time.

The PR people at Corus/Global appear to have put out a release for Toronto, even though it says "Vancouver". The first show I think will run January 21 Vancouver time, not January 22 as the release suggests.

And it's interesting to see the show being panned here on RadioWest but lauded over on the other site.

Indeed, there does seem to be some concerted “tire-pumping” going on elsewhere.

Perhaps Drex has some expat fans at the ANZA Club, taking time in between Fosters to help their mate. And who knows? Maybe they’re right. Maybe Drex has artfully made us ”misunderestimate” his abilities.

One thing for sure. Odds are bad if, in recent weeks, he hasn’t toiled to improve his diction. Unless Drex pronounces words “trippingly off the tongue” I’m afraid listeners along the network will soon tire...and tune out.

The show is based in Vancouver, so why would it start on a Sunday evening just to facilitate the Ontario stations for an overnight Sunday shift?

Much like Adler which also runs in those markets, this will be a Monday thru Friday (Vancouver time show).

I hope Drex will slow down a bit and give callers a chancce to say what they have to say without stammering and jumping all over them like he has been doing with Steele.

Being a network show, I hope it is more listener focused and listeneable than his former evening show where all he did was talk to his producer/board op. That was bad radio at it's best.

With the live time slot they should be able to pull some music talent for a chat and connect after a gig or drop in.

If they produce it, rather than have the wind to dictate the topic of the day, things could be great for those involved.

Alot of people are up at that time of night, in the Toronto, Hamilton corridor etc.

Totally agree on both but especially on the ongoing gabfest he had with the producer, if that happens it will be another waste of time to listen to.

They seem to be freaking out that he is not pro-Trump.

For "sparky",

the show will indeed be Sunday-Thursday (Vancouver time). The promos running today confirm this.

So does an emailed note from the host himself:

"Sunday 10pm start, so Sunday - Thursday on CKNW from 10pm, which is Monday - Friday 1am Toronto time."

There you have it "sparky."

"The Shift with Drex" launches in a couple of hours at 10 pm PST. It's a fairly bold experiment to go national overnight in Canada.
Best wishes to all working on the new program. So far that includes host Drex and dedicated news reader Bailey Nicholson.

Drex alludes to the "old show", meaning C2C, saying that the new program will include some of "the weird stuff".

All in all a pretty good start. Sure there were a few snafus and there are avenues for improvement, but by and large callers were happy to have a broader forum than that of local radio.
