KAPY 1290 Port Angeles 1958?

A look back at various radio stations

KAPY 1290 Port Angeles 1958?

Postby Bill Betten » Thu Apr 14, 2016 2:19 pm

Hello to the group. I am researching the old KAPY call letters and trying to determine if they first were used on 1290 in Port Angeles. If that is the case, does anyone know when the were originally issued?
Any help would be appreciated.

Not infallible, since it relies on submissions by stations themselves, but a good place to start is a Broadcasting Yearbook close to the date of original signon.

The 1961-62 edition has this to say:
June 16, 1961, is listed as the first day on the air. Call letters are listed as KAPY. John W. Mowbray is listed as President. Owner is listed as Port Angeles Radio.

A search of previous issues of Broadcasting Yearbook did not turn up any prior use of the KAPY call letters.

A couple of unusual characteristics for a 1KW Daytimer, as C&W KAPY-1290 was in the late 1960s when I visited them:
  1. Directional, presumably to protect KOL-1300 in Seattle
  2. Signoff at 6:00 p.m. in the summer months even when sunset was around 9:00 p.m.

Probably easiest to cut and paste the URL of the image then select it with your mouse and hit the "Img" button in the row of buttons just above the reply text area.

I'll take it from there as soon as I get a chance.

Hard to remember now, but as late as 1980, the word Crap was considered offensive by some adults. Not sure exactly when the word Crappy went into popular usage.

Obviously, this sticker never envisioned the popular use of the word Crappy.

It appears as KAPY is returning to the NW radio market :) Does anyone have any jingles or airchecks? Or a lead to someone that may?
Any help would be appreciated.

I must be 'really' old-fashioned in that case.. I read KAPY as 'happy'... and I have as dirty a word-string possibility as anyone else.

The KAPY call letters will soon be back on the air in Washington State. Ironically, the new KAPY will be located in a place where you had to be a DX'er to hear the old KAPY, as KOL-1300 Seattle was close enough to drown out Port Angeles' KAPY-1290.

100 watt KAPY-LP will be on 103.1 MHz and be known as Radio Duvall. Duvall is a small community North East of Seattle, not far from Redmond. http://radioduvall.org

I helped them secure the call letters.
Now to find some airchecks.
