I have another sign to go up but I thought I would switch gears
and stay in the same thread.

Seems a little quiet out there in radio land.....how about an easy quiz

who are the three guys - a news director, a curling fan and a true ham on stage:

Funny, but I was just thinking about Bill Good, Sr. a couple of hours ago. At the beginning of the 1970s, wasn't he generally considered the best Sportscaster on B.C. radio? He was on CKWX then, wasn't he?

I seem to recall Bill Good, Jr. also doing Sports on CKWX at that time, too, perhaps more like 1973.

You're 1 for 3 John ... Bill Good Sr is correct .. the other two are wrong.

I would guess at them, but it appears Mr Dog has taken the burgers out of the prize pack, so I'm boycotting.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Jim Cox was the news director at the time
this was in 1954 and I think at a CFL game

here is another quiz

this picture has been on my site for a long time but I never knew who the guy was
standing on the left of the picture. Do you know?

give BR a consolation prize - a small cupid doll.

Sorry better luck next time.

Think of someone you know who would have sponsored this election coverage.

I will NEVER forget how helpful and easygoing the late Jim Cox was to me
when I started at NW in 88'. He was doing part-time weekends, and went
out of his way to make me feel welcome, and get used to things in New West.
He was winding down and didn't have to pay any attention to me, but he did,
and it made a difference.

Lee - would be interesting to see your thoughts on Big Al.

There is a movement to get Davidson in the Sports Hall of Fame but you can only
be turned down three times and then you will never get in.

I am not sure but I know Jim Taylor and Denny Boyd and a host of other
limelights are trying to get Al in before he has a fit in heaven.

Al on the air was a rough son of a bitch. Off the air he was a pussycat.

I really liked Al - he reminded me of Burns - both flawed personalities but
great on the air.

Bill Rea was quite the promoter - without his promotions skills NW would
not have made it out of small country station status.

....and the man above that sponsored the election coverage.....none other than
Jim Pattison himself - the sign king.

Pattison made his big money in signs and business take overs. The car selling
is now just a sideline.

I'd vote for Tiger Al anytime.....even though we had our onair wars, we were very good friends off air, especially when he ran Seawatch and I ran the CKVN/CJOR & CJJC Marine Patrols. He should have been in the Hall years ago before he died. Who's in control of the Sports Hall anyway?

I didn't know Al particularly well, although I obviously listened to him for
many years. I phoned him one time when I was in Brandon to apply for a job,
he listened for a few minutes, said I needed more experience before I was ready
for the "bigtime" kid. He ripped me a little bit on the air, when he was at OR',
saying I was a Dave Hodge clone, (Hodgey had of course hired me) and Al
was no fan of anything on NW at that point. I still remember being at the Unicorn
with Dave and Neil and Bob Mcammon, when all the b.s was going on between
Al and Mcrae, some classic lines for sure.
As for the Hall part: Absolutely, he was a broadcast icon, a personality
of the highest order and well worthy of that type of recognition.
Another funny Al story, and people can flesh out the details. He told somebody
on staff to F* off, was forced to apologize, and then while chomping on his stogie,
gave this heartfelt apology: Fill in the blank____, I'm truly sorry I told you to..
and then with renewed emphasis, F* off!!! Pretty classic. I missed some of
his battles with Pat Markley by several months. It was AL's departure that actually created the opening that brought me to the T. Dog. John, it sounds like you
respected him a lot even though you were rivals.

Hall of Fame? Can there be any doubt?

Al was the guy EVERYONE listened to. There have been pale imitations since.

When we were at CJOR, Al told me "Most people here don't sound like they belong on the air. You sound like a professional." That's probably the best compliment I've ever had.

He expressed real concern about my welfare when CJOR was closing down and even offered financial help. He didn't even know me; I had only been working there for a couple of months.

That's the kind of man Al Davidson was.
