16 October 1972 CHED in the Edmonton Journal

A look back at various radio stations

16 October 1972 CHED in the Edmonton Journal

Postby albertaboy4life » Sun Feb 14, 2010 9:09 pm

Was continuing my scanning of old Billboard magazines for Alberta radio stuff.

Along with seeing an ad from Mark Century (1968) featuring its clients business cards (including that of CKXL - wish I had a copy of the jingles) there was a story that came up from The Museum of Broadcast Communications encyclopedia of radio By Christopher H. Sterling that mentions Len Theusen being attacked and forcing CHED off the air. It notes a story in the 16 October 1972 Edmonton Journal titled "Attacker Forces CHED Off The Air." Anybody know the story? Earliest digital records for the Journal I can find only go back to the early '80s.

Going strictly from memory (with apologies offered in advance) Theusen was whacked on the back of the head with a telephone handset.

Wielding the object was Russ Campbell. Campbell was either the current or former 6 to 9 jock, preceding Theusen's shift.

Word was Campbell was committed to a stay at Alberta Hospital.

Thank you freqfreak2.

That's an unfortunate event and I hope all involved recovered from it.

I would think there are microfilm archives of the Journal somewhere publicly available, like the library. If you're not in Edmonton, perhaps a member there could check it out for you.

No dice.

I've been accused of being poor-sighted before but I did give it a shot today looking through the microfilm and my search was unsuccessful. Even called the Journal to ask for a hand but there's no index available for micro-film editions.

I did, however, manage to figure out the machine after not using one in at least 15 years. Bonus, I guess. :)

Edmonton Public Library

I'm not sure what all this means, but http://www.epl.ca/EPLNewsDetail.cfm?id=30 says the following:
Edmonton Journal
Other indexes: 1961-1971 (microfilm); 1972-Apr 1973 & 1977-Aug 1979 (card index); 1974-1980 index (University of Alberta); Sept 1, 1979-Dec 31, 1992 (Local History index)

26 October 1972 turns out to be the correct date.

I've added the Edmonton Journal clipping to albertaboy4life's thread above.

Talk about a different era.

How often, these days, does one see the home address of a victim published?
