End of an Era - Broadcast Pioneer Died 20 Years Ago Today

This morning's Today in History marks the 20th anniversary of the death of a true Edmonton broadcast pioneer: Dr. G.R.A. Rice, who was station manager for CJCA when it was Edmonton's first radio station. In a couple of months, we'll be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the station's original sign-on. Dr. Rice, of course, is much better known for founding CFRN AM, FM and TV.

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the death of another Edmonton broadcast pioneer: Dr. Charles Allard. CHQT Radio, CITV-TV and SuperChannel. His greatest broadcast pioneering, however, came in building a World Class television production facility in Edmonton. Personally, I don't think we would even remember SCTV today if it had not been for their years in Edmonton at Dr. Allard's production facility.

Who do you think about when it comes to Broadcast Pioneers?
