I have heard a lot of chat about Berner but only today did I get a better
idea of where David came from and his background. I present that this morning

Born November 18, 1942 Ottawa, Ontario.
Raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba
Community development, social worker, advertising, broadcaster, actor, writer, communications teacher & consultant
January 1967 – November 1976
Founder & Executive Director of The X-Kalay Foundation Society, a residential treatment centre for alcoholics, drug addicts and ex-convicts. An abstinence program, begun in Vancouver with 3 men and $130. Within 4 years, 125 people in residence, a Shell Gas Station, a beauty parlour, a specialties advertising company, a restaurant and a hotel and restaurant on Salt Spring Island, all run by resident clients in recovery. In 1971, the entire program was duplicated in Winnipeg and continues to this day. $2M national budget in 1970 dollars.
Responsibilities included program management; property, housing, materials and supplies; individual & group therapy; financial management; fund-raising from 3 levels of government, the private sector, charities, individuals and foundations; liaison with Board of Directors, social agencies, courts, Parole & Probations, prisons and local communities.
Hundreds of lives saved, millions of dollars saved, lasting impact of methodology on like-minded institutions.
