Postby radiofan » Thu Jun 05, 2008 3:39 pm

Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Stan Buchanan died June 3rd in Surrey at age 77. He worked for CFUN, CKLG, CJOR and CKWX in the 50s and 60s, but was most noted for drawing the Top Dog mascot as Promotions Director at CKNW. His work in radio was mostly behind the scenes, although he was on air at CJOR during their country format time in the early 1960s. He went on to serve as Program Director for AM and FM stations in the Salinas/Monterey area in California. He then returned to Vancouver in the 1970s and worked in promotions for a record company before taking early retirement. A Memorial Service will be held June 6th at 12:30 pm at Vancouver Memorial Chapel. Sun/Province obituary

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Buchanan pictured in the early days around 1956. He had been a partner with Mel Cooper at UBC (BC Creative Productions)

Re the long stretch at CKNW - he was there only 3 and a half years.

Thanks TD.

I wonder if any of his original Top Dog drawings exist today?
