The CBC had asked for another two years of advertising on CBC Radio Two and its French equivalent, together making up what used to be known as the CBC's FM networks, but that application was denied today by the CRTC.
Thanks to Dan Sys' Canadian Radio News for the tip. Here is the CRN article:
ADVERTISING COMES TO AN END ON CBC RADIO TWO AND ICI MUSIQUE
The three year experiment allowing national advertising on CBC Radio Two and Ici Musique has come to an abrupt end today. The CRTC denied the CBC's application to allow advertising to continue until August 31, 2018 on the two national FM services.
The CRTC stated that a multitude of interventions opposing the application were received from other broadcasters, industry associations, advertising agencies, and individuals. The CRTC was also concerned that revenue gained from the three year advertising experiment had not gone back into improved programming as had been promised. Furthermore the Trudeau government has pledged to increase funding to the CBC over the next five years which will make advertising irrelevant.
