Five Broadcast Heroes Transmit into Giants
Giants of Edmonton

September 10, 2013

Five local sportscasters who delivered some of the most exciting sports news and events to Edmontonians will now be immortalized as the tenth mural in the Giants of Edmonton program.

Ernie Afaganis, Bryan Hall, Al McCann, Rod Phillips and John Short are featured in the mural. Over the past 50 years, the five broadcasters have won the hearts of Edmontonians while showcasing the city on national and international levels.

“Edmonton is a city that prides itself on its sports teams and by extension its sportscasters who bring the excitement and passion of the games Edmontonians love into their homes,” said Councillor Bryan Anderson. “The Giants of Edmonton program also allows us to strengthen civic pride by beautifying our city while deterring graffiti vandalism.”

The mural, The Sportscasters, was created by local artist Kris Friesen and is located on the north facing wall of the Capilano Centre at 10050 50 Street.

“My concept for this mural is a montage showcasing five of our renowned local sports broadcasters,” said Friesen. “They are all caught in action commentating on the sports scenes around them: hockey, football, and the Olympics.”

Melcor Developments Ltd., the property owner, donated the site for the mural as part of their participation with Capital City Clean Up’s Giants of Edmonton mural program.

The Giants of Edmonton mural program is a partnership between Capital City Clean Up’s Graffiti Management Program and 630 CHED. Mural subjects are nominated through an online poll of 630 CHED listeners. The City of Edmonton then selects the subject from among the suggestions and finances the mural.

Would be much better if Wes Montgomery and Tiger Goldstick were included.

Yes to Montgomery. Didn't Goldstick also run a restaurant, Goldstick & Chan?
