CJLI-700 Calgary Launching Monday (June 29)

Postby jon » Sat Jun 27, 2015 8:18 am

CJLI is launching Monday according to their web site.

They are back on the air now with their Testing Period announcement, after a lengthy outage (Open Carrier, no audio) early last week.

Here's hoping their actual studio feed is at a much higher bit rate for the STL than the bit rate of the audio loop being used during their test phase. It's full of digital artifacts and sounds pretty bad.

Music changed, too, and now includes vocals.

That would be an interesting pitch, for any AM station that plays much music. To increase listenership of their Live Stream, run it in stereo. After all, there is not much point running AM Stereo given how hard it is to find a working AM Stereo receiver these days.

Trivia note: handy feature on the $12.95 Sony ICF-S10MK2 pocket radio is the Tune light. Meant to tell you when you are off frequency for a station by lighting up when you are getting a clean signal, it also helped me know that CJLI was running an Open Carrier, having just lost its audio last week, with the transmitter still on the air.

Dan Sys reports hearing them in Aldergrove this morning in that brief 15 minute June window between Calgary sunrise and Spokane area (KXLX) sunrise. He caught CJLI on day pattern with KXLX on night power.

Pattern and power changes for stations occur at Sunrise and Sunset as calculated by the following method: for each calendar month, take the closest Quarter Hour (:15, :30, :45, :00) to Sunset or Sunrise at the transmitter site on the 15th of the calendar month.

Today I was listening to this station and I noticed around Red Deer this morning the signal strength was much stronger than It has been in recent weeks. Also the audio level seems higher but the mp3 audio stream was breaking up and glitching so bad this morning that you can barely make out what they are saying. i hope a better quality STL is in the works.

Last night, CJLI was dominating 700 here in suburban Vancouver. No sign of Spokane or anyone else. First time I've heard an ID from them.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
