Most activity on Alberta AM band since 1986?

Postby albertaboy4life » Mon Jul 27, 2015 8:55 am

With CFCW's move to 840 coming up next month and AM 700 launching earlier this year in Calgary, isn't 2015 the most active year for AM frequency activity in Alberta since 1986? (Excluding the years that saw a lot of AM to FM flips.)

Not since then, when CKRD moved from 850 to 700; CHQR moved to 770 from 810; and CHQT moved from 1110 to 880, have we seen this much activity on the AM dial.

It is an almost certainty that the CRTC will grant at least one new license for Edmonton over the next 18 months. Two of the four published applications are for AM, one for 580 and the other for the nosebleed section of the AM band, at 1650.

1650 is not as silly as it seems, given how many available AM frequencies there are in the old AM band (540-1600). A single tower (omni-directional pattern) transmitter site is a huge savings in costs, and you still have to be above 1600 KHz around here to get a decent amount of power at night without running a directional pattern. Although Alberta has lost most of its AM stations, the U.S. keeps getting more, and those are the stations that have to be protected at night.
