Postby radiofan » Thu Nov 05, 2015 10:01 am

The CRTC has denied the applications from Clear Sky and Golden West for a new FM station in Sylvan Lake.

Thanks to Dan Sys at Canadian Radio News for passing this along!

I'd think both companies would be relieved with this decision. In the time since they applied, oil is less than 50% of what it was, the NDP was elected and tens of thousands of oil industry workers have been laid off. Talking to friends in Red Deer radio, revenues are down 20-30% and it's getting pretty ugly.

This leaves, I believe, BlackGold's Ponoka FM bid as the only remaining proposed station in the area. That was scheduled to be heard about 2 weeks ago at a CRTC Hearing, so it could be a while before a Decision is announced by the CRTC.

BlackGold runs stations in Leduc and Stony Plain/Spruce Grove, both similar markets to each other, in that most residents work (and often play) in Edmonton. Ponoka is a bit different, but the owner's NorNet lengthy experience should serve him well.

Thank God the commission had the good sense to deny these.

The Red Deer market has to be the most over-radioded market in Alberta.

Now isn't the time to be slicing the pie any thinner.

Now the Clear Sky folks can get back getting the Strathmore Flame Thrower on the air and Golden West can pour some energy into getting Drumheller on track with
it's POP issues.
