A Flash Note by TD Securities makes the point that Shaw has the potential to "disrupt the Big 3 wireless players here in Canada":
Comcast reiterated their plans to launch a Wi-Fi based wireless service using their 15 million Wi-Fi hotspots and Verizon's wireless network (link). The technology to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi hotspots and cellular networks lays the groundwork for Shaw to piggyback on these improvements once they have a better quality LTE wireless network by mid-2017. Shaw already owns a dense Wi-Fi network in Western Canada (over 75,000 hotspots) and would be able to deploy this service without relying on a third party wireless carrier....but first and foremost we believe Shaw will need more spectrum and a better network.
