OTA HD in Vancouver

Postby kal » Wed Aug 20, 2014 11:20 am

What is a reasonable channel lineup to expect with an antenna for over the air HD content in the greater Vancouver area?

I experimented a few years ago with a $15 indoor antenna and pulled in five channels. I'm not expecting to pull in many more with a more expensive antenna or even with one mounted outside but I'm wondering what an upper limit might be for channels around here?

I just got an HD antenna - Channel Master Smartenna
I'm getting about 11 channels
CBUFT CBC French
KBTC
KBTC 2
TVW
CIVT
CBUT CBC
CHAN -global
CKVU
ME-TV
KVOS
CIVI - CTV -sometimes a weak signal
SURSAGAR

I put the antenna on my balcony. - it's an outdoor model.
I'm in Burnaby, on the first floor, surrounded by high rises.

Bye Bye cable!

Just curious, since I don't live there, but are you getting KBTC off the 15KW Orcas Island transmitter officially known as K24IC-D?

And, I'm also assuming that ME-TV, KVOS and Sur Sagar TV are KVOS-TV's channels 12.1, 12.2 and 12.3, respectively.

Does that antenna require any aiming? Is it a powered antenna? I wonder if you could identify some of the not so obvious channels you have listed?

If you were in the Westwood Plateau area of Coquitlam, you'd be able to get most of the Seattle stations no problem.

A further wrinkle to the OTA issue ... the CRTC has today announced that "local stations may apply to shut down their transmitters" seeing as most people are viewing over cable of some sort.

Hi,
Here are a few answers... no the antenna is not powered. I do have a long cable so I added an amplifier from The Source, but I'm not sure its really doing much. I haven't tried aiming the antenna.... not and its only about 4 feet above ground level.... I may try moving it higher...

The channel list says 2-1, 8-1, 10-1, 12-1,12-2,12-3,17-1,26-1,28-1,28-2, 28-3,32-1
KBTC
KBTC 2
TVW - kbtc- 3 this is a station that televises civic meetings etc
CIVT ctv
CBUT CBC
CBUFT CBC French - forgot to list this one....
CHAN -global
CKVU -city tv
ME-TV
KVOS DT -Cool tv
CIVI - CTV2 -sometimes a weak signal
SURSAGAR - Asian Indian? language Tv

I have no idea which transmitters I am getting...

I also tried the NorthVu powered antenna but kept losing the signal on some stations... but I was also intermittently getting Antenna TV (a USA network) The NorthVu is an indoor model... and I went with the Outdoor Smartenna
