Nearly Half of Local TV Could Soon Be Gone.

Canadian Press/Global News
OTTAWA – Nearly half of the country’s local TV stations could be off the air by 2020 without a boost in revenues to pay for local programming, the national broadcast regulator has been told as it prepares to open public hearings into the viability of local TV.

The warning comes in a study submitted to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission in advance of hearings that begin Monday.

Local TV is so bad it won't be missed. The local TV "news" comes straight out of the Province or the Sun. No investigative or political reporting other than handouts from the government. I stopped watching years ago so I don't care if they pull the plug on them. What else do they do? A morning show with a bunch of amateurs engaging in happy talk? Traffic reports on TV? Local stations are nothing but another outlet for US programming or clones of US programming sold as Canadian. Canadians all up in arms about netflix cutting them off from the US version of the service when they should have been complaining about how the government has allowed big companies to whore out the public air waves for maximum profits. Large broadcasting corporations in cahoots with the Harper and the CRTC have gutted Canadian broadcasting in favor of big corporate profits. By allowing consolidation they've systematically dismantled what was once a great public service and reduced it to a bad joke. The CRTC might as well finish the job and put these stations out of their misery. RIP.

CHEK-TV is already running a promo whining about this. In it, they state that the bigass cable companies pay big bucks to US content providers such as HBO, AMC, ESPN, but DON'T provide any revenue payments to local over-the-air broadcasters. They urge viewers to file an intervention supporting local stations. We're already paying outrageous cable fees. If cable companies are forced to pay broadcasters carriage fees, the resulting increase in cable bills will have many Canadians shutting off cable TV. Then, everyone loses. We have the CRTC & the allowed monopolies to blame. Corporate profits over content & quality plus technology evolution have pretty much driven local TV into the ground. We already have a public broadcaster that we support - the CBC/Radio-Canada and that's enough! I am sorry for the many who will lose employment as a result but am not prepared to subsidize broadcasters for the sake of job retention.

Again I ask, What local programming?
All that's left are the stupid "morning shows" and the so-called "newscasts."
Who the hell has time to watch TV in the morning besides retired people?
All the rest is canned crap from somewhere else.
