NEW YORK Chalk up one more of the top editorial cartoonists in the business to lose his job.
The Vancouver Sun has laid off Roy Peterson, 73, who has been with the Sun for 47 years. In that time he has won seven National Newspaper Awards, the most in the history of the awards in any category.
To add insult to injury, Steve Greenberg reports on Daryl Cagle’s Political Cartoonists Index Web site, the Sun also killed Peterson’s final cartoon.
As a freelancer, Peterson has also drawn cartoons for MacLean's, Time, Punch, Spectator and for many books, including some in a long partnership with former Sun columnist Alan Fotheringham. His book series with Stanley Burke, Frog Fables and Beaver Tales, sold more than 250,000 copies.
In addition, Peterson regularly represents Canadian cartoonists at the annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention. He’s considered the “dean” of Canadian editorial cartoonists.
In 2004, Peterson was made an Officer of the Order of Canada
