Ottawa rock radio station changes name, format after only a year
By Tony Lofaro, The Ottawa Citizen
June 29, 2011

OTTAWA — Ottawa radio station EZ-Rock is tweaking its music format after only a year on the air.

In an announcement to be made Thursday, the station will be renamed BOOM and play music from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. The station, at 99.7 FM, is dropping the music of contemporary artists and playing a “greatest hits” format from those decades, said general manager Denis Bouchard.

“Radio is so competitive now, but this is more a narrow positioning of the music. But the target demo of women 35 to 54 is not changing,” said Bouchard.

Neil Hedley, a co-host of EZ-Rock’s morning show since the station began broadcasting, has left. No other staff changes are planned, Bouchard said.

Astral mgt in Vancouver should be taken out to the strait and dropped over the side. Brad and Stu destroyed the place.

Who is running Astral?

Time to wake up, put down the bong and get a real job.

Man, a licence to print money and they still screw it up.

650 CISL had an unheard of over 5.0 and they blew that. Their FM station sounds like a bunch of illiterate, Chimps on helium.

The new format launched at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, with a promise of a commercial-free long weekend.

I'm not familiar with the on-air lineup that EZ Rock Ottawa had, but the Astral press release claims that the on-air staff will continue, with the possible exception of some re-jigging of the Morning Show to focus more on music and less on talk.

Has Bill Courage been blown out?

If Astral gets the stick, it proves that the day of the independent is a sham. Get a licence, suck, and then sell for big money.

Like Jenny, but man, that Station, the Shore is terribly spotty.

Boom radio will be a bust here.

Of course CFUN is so bad - and The Peak is a molehill....so who knows?

The 2 Astral stations here in Nova Scotia seem pretty well run. Good on-air staff and plenty of involvement in the community. Sounds as if they are the "black sheep" of sorts.

Goldie,
Hagopian isn't ragging on Astral management exclusively.
You're new, but if you'd been here awhile, you'd know that hag's disappointed with the way the medium has been managed (mis-managed) and shamelessly exploited by everyone from Clear Channel to Rogers and on down the line.
I am too; he (or she) is just a lot more expressive about the issue than I.

I see.

Still curious what this had to do with Astral in Ottawa. Isn't that what this thread is about?

Heh heh. You're new here aren't you.
The general rule of thumb is the first couple of comments in a thread have to do with the actual topic, then there's a Robert O Smith reference, then the good old days at CHUM and then a warning to have Plan B.
