BIG layoffs at Corus station
Winnipeg Sun

BIG 97.5 has laid off a morning-show and drive-time host in yet another restructuring.

Jolene Dawn, who worked on the station's morning show, was laid off Tuesday, and her co-host Jay Richardson will be shuffled off the show. Drive-time host Adam Kolisnyk, a.k.a. Adam K., was also laid off.

In an email, Corus spokesperson Magda Krpan wrote, "we do not comment on personnel matters but we can confirm that Jolene and Adam are no longer with the station. Jay will continue on with Corus Radio Winnipeg."

It's been a volatile year at local Corus stations.

Power 97 rebranded to BIG 97.5 Jan. 30, 2015 amid slumping ratings, and tweaked its format from rock to classic rock.

The format change came days after Corus let multiple staff members go, including morning guy T.J. Connors.

This spring's radio ratings brought more bad news for Corus, with BIG 975 slumping to 2.2, from 2.6 in the fall of 2014 and 4.2 in spring 2014. In that same May 2015 update from Numeris, CJOB was dethroned for the first time in decades, with CBC's listenership surpassing that of Corus' news superstation.

The year before, CJOB laid off morning host Hal Anderson, who'd been with Corus for decades. Matt Cundill, who had been the program director for Power 97 and Fresh 99.1 and Olivia Billson — Anderson's producer and on-air foil — was also let go.

And just this past July, longtime CJOB host Charles Adler decided to quit, while early-evening sports show host Jim Toth was laid off.

Local media experts told the Sun the layoffs and departures are just more signs that radio stations need to adapt to a changing media landscape.

Tweeted requests for comment to Tuesday's affected hosts were not immediately returned.

This morning's Broadcast Dialogue has some additional details:
REVOLVING DOOR:
Talk show host Charles Adler, after 17 years at CJOB Winnipeg, did his last show there on Friday. He’s moving to a radio job in B.C. though it’s not known at which station. His background includes stints at CJAD Montreal, CFPL London, CHML Hamilton and CFRB Toronto, as well as a U.S. syndicated radio show from Tampa. Succeeding Adler is Geoff Currier, a CJOB veteran who moved from his Nighthawk show... Other departures at Corus Winnipeg include Jolene Dawn of the BIG 97.5 morning show, BIG 97.5 afternoon host Adam Kolisnyk, a.k.a. Adam K., sports show host/producer Jim Toth at CJOB, and Vanessa Mancini,
promotions director for the Corus Winnipeg cluster. Jay Richardson, morning host at BIG 97.5 will continue with Corus Radio Winnipeg in a different role. JD Francis resigned as morning host at 99.1 Fresh FM Winnipeg. He’d been in that slot since February. The new morning co-hosts are Vicki Shae and Clint James...

I'm highly skeptic of this rumour, but the word on the street in some circles in Vancouver is that Adler will end up on CKNW as a local on-air host, not syndicated.

As I say, I'm skeptical, but the only way I'd see Adler ending up at CKNW would involve him being the replacement for Ian K. Not that that would preclude him being on-air, too.

The Adler syndicated show (run delayed) on NW was a failure in the evenings.

If he was to come to NW, I'd think it would be for the 10 - 2 slot or maybe borrow a page from the days when NW was so ratings challenged and have him 9 - Noon.

NW could even bring back the Corus Network and offer the show to NL in Kamloops, News Talk 1150 in Kelowna and CFAX in Victoria.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

A further drift to the right would be a bad move for 'NW....and Charles is waaaaaay out there. Be done with it, I say, and give Jordan Bateman his own show...then unplug the xmtr and go home.

Adler is overrated as a talk show host. I find him bland and cliquey.

As for a shift to the right if you havent noticed NW has been trying to shift to the left pretty well on all shows and it doesnt seem to be generating much interest and if anything got them a lot of listener attrition. Keep in mind that lefties dont support their talk radio much just look at Air America which was a total flop along with some quasi-well known shows (Ed Shultz for starters) who also flopped. Keep in mind that many dont own an AM radio outside of older union members and retired hippies who have an AM receiver next to their 8 tracks in the attic.
