CKAV-9 Ottawa off the air

Postby jon » Mon May 16, 2011 12:58 pm

There are reports that both the transmitter and web site of CKAV-9 in Ottawa are "off the air". And have been for a week now.

Dan reports that AVR's Vancouver transmitter is still on the air. And I am also picking up Edmonton's.

Judging by how long it took to get the network off the ground, I'm not surprised. They must have serious financial issues.

A friend in Ottawa informed me that AVR is back on the air this morning. Must have been a technical issue.

In fairness to the guy who originally reported this on another board, he waited nearly a week.

Other than campus stations, CBC LPRTs and Seventh Day Adventist repeaters of VOAR-FM, a week is forever for a station to be off the air. In a major market, a couple of hours is a "once a decade" major transmitter failure. I don't recall many 12 hour failures in smaller markets. Other than the Vancouver 730 transmitter site rebuild that coincided with a format change and saw them off air for a month, all other lengthy outages that I recall were financial and ended up in an ownership change: CKUA in the late 1990s and CJCA in the early 1990s come to mind.

To paraphrase: if a transmitter is off the air and no one's listening, did it ever make a sound?
