OK, please refresh my memory on the Christmas music situation on Vancouver radio this past December: did anyone start early in December (or late November, arghh)?

At first glance, CHQM looks like they got a big ratings bump from Christmas listening. But, a look at the January and February numbers indicates their overall listenership is up in January and February, over September to November.

CKWX, The Peak and CFMI all got sizable upward ratings bumps up in February.

Team 1040's bump is smaller, but might be significant given the apparent competition from sister station Team 1410. The only problem with that argument is that Team 1040 went up the same 0.3 percentage points that Team 1410 went down.

On the other hand, the Team, taking both stations together, now has a 4.6, which looks better than anything Team 1040 has done itself since S2-2009.

Again, meaningless 2+ stats.
The real numbers still to come.

There was no all Christmas station in Vancouver other than Contemporary Christan formatted KLYN from Lynden, WA.

Rogers didn't have to do a format change and stunt with Christmas music this year.

BBM Overview: New PPM Ratings - March 2010
By David Bray - Posted on 11 March 2010

It’s official. Radio buyers, sellers and programmers in 5 key markets now speak only one language…PPM. As of Fall ’09, they were still bilingual, having “Diary” to fall back on. But the safety net has been pulled. Today’s PPM radio release from BBM completes the thirteen week period covering Nov. 30, 2009 to Feb. 28, 2010.

This marks the second 13 week period in the new era of measurement for Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Diary measurement is now a thing of the past in these markets. Let’s take a look at the numbers.

Toronto: Bragging rights at the top of the ratings heap go to CHFI-FM with a 13.9% share of hours tuned for A12+ (as compared from 13.0 last time out) followed by CHUM-FM with a 9.8% (down from 11.4%). Office favourite CHFI-FM now leads the way for females 25-54 with an 18.3% share (up from 15.1% ) followed by another office station CHUM-FM with 16.7% share (down from 19.5%). Q107 is on top for males 25-54, posting a 13.9% share (compared with 14.1% in the last 13 week book). The Edge held their #1 slot with M18-34 turning in a 14.4% share.

Vancouver: CKNW holds #1 for A12+ with a 14.0% share of hours tuned (as compared to 13.4% in the Fall). PPM seems to like CKNW, in part due to the fact that it is played in a wide variety of environments. Office station 103.5QM-FM, continuing to benefit from the new methodology, is in the top spot for F25-54 with a 15.6% share (compared to 16.0%). In a tight race for M25-54 listeners CKNW (with 10.5%) inched out Rock 101 (with 10.3%). For M18-34, CKNW tops the list followed with 15.8% share of hours tuned followed by the FOX with 12.3%. When it comes to Females 18-34 Virgin stays on top with a 16.6% share (compared to 16.7 in the Fall) followed by the Beat at 11.3%

Thank you for posting David Bray's numerical breakdown which tells a WAY different story than 2+. Looks like the FOX lost a tonne of women. (Or natural order is as it should be)

I would love to know what Rogers expects from NEWS 1130 as a share. Because it seems pretty good to me, and yet there are these continuous rumours out Ash street that they want to change formats to talk, instead of a news wheel. That could be why Jacquie parted ways, and Paul Ski does have a fondness for talk radio.

Where would you possibly hear rumours like that Grumpy? I think News 1130 is one of the better performers in the Rogers Radio folio. If it was getting numbers like 1410 or 730, then I could see Rogers making a change. Do some research before you make idiotic claims about a successful radio station. Are your initials GG by any chance?

As for Jacquie, talk to almost anybody at 2440 and you'll soon find out why the parted ways.

As for Paul Ski's fondness for talk radio, all one has to do is look at how successful CFUN 'Talk With Attitude' was. If that was the extent of his fondness for talk radio, I'd suggest he might be better off working as a barista at Starbucks!

Kat, I've heard the talk flip rumours from more than one person. Remember, this is a Toronto thing. And Toronto looks at NW, and sees a huge share, and wonders if there's a way to work talk into the format.

I agree, News 1130 is a consistently programmed, tight format. But what I posted has nothing to do with homework, and everything to do with being fairly dialed in.

Well well... look at this. I go away for a couple of weeks and grumpy old fart (I think you may be right Kat) is trying to stir things up on Ash Street again.
Take this to the bank, they're not gonna do talk. Why would they? NW has that market locked up.
Now go back to your meds old man.

Oh yeah, and what's this with this Airchecker dude... sure looks to me like he just ripped the rating charts off this site and posted them on his. C'mon man, at least give credit where its due. Even what's his name in the south Okanagan ;) is starting to do that now.

How about Graham Hicks in the Edmonton Sun? His Hicks on Six blog entry for March 11 contained an Edmonton ratings chart that sure looks like the Radio West format.. without giving credit. .

I know it's hard for some of you to accept, but this is a new world. A PPM world. Time spent listening has become a MAJOR issue. You don't get 15 minutes from someone anymore...you get a minute or two. I'm not trying to stir anything up...I'm telling you, they want more time spent listening, and they're not getting it from a news wheel. Yes, they could probably maintain a decent news room and STILL have talk programming...but the fact is, the issue of talk programming has been discussed and explored, and I'm saying that it's a contributing factor to JD's departure. Combine that with NW's reliance on 54+ numbers, and I could easily understand why Rogers may be keen on looking into it. You may THINK that 'NW has talk locked up...but look closer at the giant hole in younger demos. The fact that CFUN is no longer doing talk, and that the TEAM 1040 has fantastic time spent listening...it starts to make some sense. And if any of you know Paul Ski, and I mean REALLY know Paul, you'll also know of his love for talk programming.

Time spent listening...it's being measured per second now...not "approximately estimated" from loyal fans.

I don’t care what you experts say, WX going talk would probably be equivalent to the KIRO blunder in Seattle. News addicts and Talk radio fans are two whole different breeds of people.

Grumpy I am impressed that you don't take the 'barbs' seriously. You are persistent with your point.
Both qualities I admire.

As for WX going talk - I think Rogers would be making a mistake with that idea
but I could see them using another station to compete with talkNW and use WX's news services
to bolster that station.

Just a thought from ski hill
