Easy Rock is the obvious story this time. But "say what?" is the most obvious answer.

September was a really, really bad month for them. And December a really, really good month.

December was All Christmas music, which has worked well for them in past years. A few people listen less, but a large number of non-listeners or irregular listeners switch their dial to 104.3 just for the month of December. Yes, there are a lot of Edmontonians who really like Christmas music at Christmas time. Whodda thunk?

The only answer for September is that it took a while to come back to the station after the departure of Shane and Cheryl from the three person morning team at the end of July. With the third member, Seanna, also away the first week of August, and no immediate explanation from the station, most listeners would have concluded she was gone too, and some undoubtedly tuned to another station. Seanna was paired with Ron Clark, who had previously done Afternoon Drive.

In the states the December PPM info is pretty much disregarded because of blips on the screen from All Christmas stations. I'm sure the same will happen here.

Nonetheless, I still think it would have been interesting to have seen the reactions of Astral management in Toronto when they first saw the ratings for the former Easy Rock Toronto: they were up 1.1 over last month's rolling three month numbers. And the ratings period only includes two days of the new Boom-FM, too small to even make a 0.1 difference.

I'm sure that, after they had a chance to think about it, they would, as Radiofan suggests, write it off to Christmas music.

It will be interesting to see next month's numbers for Toronto.

One issue: if December's numbers are a "problem", as Radiofan indicates has been identified as such in the U.S., BBM's three month rolling numbers are going to mean three months' worth of distorted numbers. Because it will be three ratings from now before December is "gone".
