Edmonton PPM June 28 - September 26, 2010

The Top 5 are certainly the success stories. Amazing that NOW (CKNO) could sign-on early in the year and now be tied for third place. Sounds like the legendary stories of Top 40 stations in the '60s: change format to Top 40, or switch to Drake style formatics and go from Nowhere to Top Three.

Number 8, 10 and 12, Sonic, Easy Rock and The Bounce, are the ones really in trouble. All three face newcomers:
  • Sonic is already being hit hard by (I assume) NOW
  • Easy Rock is very likely to get hit again as soon as Magic 99's format switch finally happens, since it is almost certainly to be some kind of Adult Contemporary
  • The Bounce will also be hit again if HOT 107 moves to more on-air personalities.

All three are candidates for big changes in the not too distant future. The Bounce, of course, will likely wait until Rogers takes over (currently awaiting CRTC approval).

Not sure why Harvard is not listed.

From tomorrow morning's Hicks on Six (Edmonton Sun, page 6, Graham Hicks' column):

Now FM makes its mark

Edmonton’s latest radio ratings, from the summer, show the impact of one successful new station on the listening habits of a city.

Now 102.3 came on air just six months ago as a breezy, personality-plus, pop music station.

Now has done unbelievably well, sharing third-place in the ratings (behind the perennial one-two CHED and CISN-FM) with Capital FM, at an 8.4 share (a share is a percentage of the total listening market, a combination of listeners and hours listened).

Now 102.3’s success was EZ Rock (dropping from an 8.1 share one year ago to a 5.6 share) and Sonic’s (9 share last fall to 6.4 share today) downfall. Same thing happened to The Bounce when direct competitor Hot 107 came on air and swiped near half the Bounce audience.

The next few months get even more interesting in the competition for the 25 to 55 year-old soft rock/pop ears. Sound 95.7 FM came on air a few weeks ago. Magic 99 is soon to relaunch with less jazz and more pop.

See Today’s Blog for the actual “PPM” (Personal People Meter) summer ratings report for Edmonton radio.
