End of Clear FM - FM 104.9 Launch

Postby radiofan » Fri Sep 26, 2008 2:57 pm

Vancouver's 104.9 Clear FM became FM 104.9 "The Greatest Hits Of All Time" at 2PM Friday September 26th.

Here's the last few minutes of Clear FM and the launch of FM 104.9.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Interesting to hear the same jingle package as Easy Rock Edmonton (used to?) use on the last few minutes of Clear. It wouldn't have stood out so much in my mind if they weren't singing the same frequency (104.9).

Interesting there wasn't a single cancon tune in the promo piece (as far as I could tell). Get ready for all the BTO and Guess Who you can stand!

I was surprised that there wasn't much in the way of the history of Clear FM in the switch. Do you suppose there will be more in an announcement on air tomorrow morning?

By the way, I was listening online :)

Don't hold your breath for anything right away. Changes like this are usually accompanied by at least a week of dj-free music

Oh... yeah, you're correct. I remember when CILA-FM (LA-107) switched formats, there were no commercials for about a week. *gasp*

The Greatest Hits of All-time? Interesting, heard some of it
yesterday, thought it was just a feature they were doing. Not sure
how it differs from other Classic Rock formats, but as I'm prone to
say, and hope no one takes offence, "Serve it up".

Trivia note: "The Greatest Hits of All Time" is already in use in this market (Edmonton) by CAM-FM for their Jack-like format. Last time I checked, they play mid-'60s to mid-2000s.

I just checked and CAM-FM has followed JOE-FM, and added some "currents".

glaherty: Cannot speak for other markets, but basically there are three different formats here:
- Jack-FM style, which started as an '80s and '90s format, and has now been expanded to mid-'60s to Current.
- Classic Rock, which tends to focus on "heavier" rock, typically with lots of electric guitar and bass, from the birth of Album Rock in the late 1960s to no later than the early '90s. As of a few years back, Heavy Metal is no longer included.
- Oldies and '80s; even Cool 8-80 had been heavy into the '80s since the short-lived JOE-AM format. W-14-40 is probably the only Oldies station I'm aware of in Alberta that does not include much in the way of '80s.
