CKNW RUL Winner

If you were a CKNW listener prior to the mid 1980's, you'll remember the hourly 'Are You Listening' contest.

If there was a winner, you'd hear this snappy little jingle.

I just saw Jack Lemmon's 1964 movie "Good Neighbour Sam" last week for the first time. And this jingle immediately reminded me of the background plot that ran through the entire movie.

Jack Lemmon's character (Sam) works for a large L.A. advertising agency. And he is forever walking through the studio where they are trying to film a Hertz commercial. The Hi-Lo's always sing in perfect harmony, and the band never misses a note, but they never seem to drop the actor into the car for the "Let Hertz Put You in the Driver's Seat" ad.

The CKNW singers sound an awful lot like bargain basement Hi-Lo's.

By the way, the punch line of this little sub-plot is, when the film ends, they finally drop the actor into the driver's seat, but then he says "Boy, was that good coffee!".

I'm still waiting for the lyrics: "That name again is Mr. Plow!"
