Ah yes, the Empress.....where all the off duty cops would gather after their shifts, get pissed and drive home. I'm sad to inform you that the clientele of the Empress of today has evolved into crackheads, junkies, and drugged out ladies of the night who look like they've been run over by paddywagons. Those old Johnny Cash tunes on the jukebox have been replaced by "AM 730 Sparky Traffic" on the audio system, but that appetizing jar of pickled eggs is still sitting at the bar though.

Dan Sys wrote: The only drawback with that is I hear that the pubs in Oliver still haven't quite caught up to the 21st century yet. They have segregated "Ladies & Escorts" and "Mens" sections, as well as the red terrycloth round tables (with a salt shaker on each one). The waiters still wear white shirts with bow ties and greet you with a "what'll it be Mac?" and the Todd's Reddi-Hot Cubanette is the most popular item on the lunch and dinner menus.

That description will make TD pine for the days of The Ambassador on Seymour, next to Faces.

Naturally, that was before my time. I only read about it in history books.

Wasn't the Ambassador an overflow bar for the Castle? I think they had a jar of pickled sausages sitting at the bar.

Pickled sausages.

No, I'd better not say it.

P.S.: It's still before my time, you know.

I think Dan and Jim would make a nice couple tokin at Faces after a couple of pickled eggs bought at the Castle.

I am so old I can remember when gay men wore white patent leather shoes and polyester pants... thank god I was straight at the time.

LMAO - off the charts!

When I think of white shoed Socred car salesmen George Kerster immediately comes to mind. He was dubbed "the giant killer" after defeating Dave Barrett by 18 votes in Coquitlam in 1975.

The Castle was a pub on Granville Street located between Georgia & Robson. If I'm not mistaken Gary Taylor's was located on Seymour Street near Davie. It used to be called The King Of Clubs, famous for launching the career of Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers of which Tommy Chong was a member.

Trivia time .. what was Bobby Taylor & The Vancouver's original name?

(political correctness doesn't count in this thread!)
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
