Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

It looks like JOE has seen better days. And what's happened to the momentum that CAPITAL FM had? They were doing better before the big $$ morning show hit the air. Is this a sign that people are tired of hearing old Rob & Audey bits from 10 years ago? You'd think with the bucks they are pulling down, they'd be able to bring something fresh to the table each day, IMHO.
Glad to see The Bear take a kick in the backside. Maybe the latest round of antics will drop them even lower when results of the current book are released.
Will K-97 ever regain what it had a few years ago?
In the next year there will be several new signals in the market all looking for a piece of the pie. Could be very interesting.

Something's fishy about those BEAR numbers. Where'd they go? I'll bet it's back up to at least an 8 next book.

Oh, No, I hope ("fishy") we're not getting into another round of The Bear jokes, from their days when every DJ had an outdoors name. Only "Yukon" remains.

Likely out the door with Marty Forbes when he retired at the beginning of the year.

Yes, rating could improve in the future, but Marty is also starting up a consulting business that conceivably could see him helping out Astral and The Bear.

Agreed. Numbers say Men went to The Bounce and K97.

The Bear was WAY down in M25-34, in fact The Bounce beat them in that demo by a point or so.

M25-34 is notorious for "swings" one way or the other. There are less than 100 diaries for 90,000 people in that demo. Most of The Bounce's gains can be credited to M25-34 as they are at their average through the rest of the numbers.

K-97 had serious gains in that demo too. They are down in M35-54 but doubling in M25-34 to keep their overall rank the same.

It is a strange M25-34 in Edmonton. Logic says that the demo shouldn't have a sudden love for Katy Perry and The Doobie Brothers when the weather is cold. Who ever said BBM was logical?

Hicks on Six

Postby jon » Fri Apr 03, 2009 11:50 am

From this morning's Hicks on Six in the Edmonton Sun:

CBC RADIO HAS CLOUT

Either Edmonton's radio habits are changing dramatically or the radio rating "book" for the first three months of 2009 is all screwy.

CBC Radio One, forever middle-of-the-pack (for listenership), is suddenly in second place!

Nobody touches the CBC Edmonton AM and RadioActive shows for excellent coverage of all things Edmontonian.

But why such a dramatic rise in listeners, from eighth, nine months ago, to second?

Then again, CBC Radio One has been on the march, from 10th last fall, eighth last spring, sixth in the fall and now to second. Congratulations, CBC!

Information radio is hot. News/sports CHED, equally good at what it does, is so far out in front it's not funny - four points ahead of second-place CBC.

Rock radio is in the tank. How could The Bear win Rock Station of the Year at the Canadian Music Awards, yet drop from third to seventh in three months? Are these inaccurate radio ratings?

But the other two rockers, Sonic-FM and K-97, also dropped to 10th and 11th respectively. (This "book" doesn't reflect K-97's Bill, Steve & Terry morning-show reunion.)

The top-40, youth-skewed Bounce is hanging in at third place.

Country's as dependable as ever. CISN lost some points but is still fourth, CFCW is just as steady.

Joe-FM, Capital-FM, EZ Rock and Magic 99 are basically pursuing the same audience.

EZ's on top in fourth. Joe's in eighth, Capital FM at ninth and Magic 99 down at 13th.

Here are the ratings by "share" (a combination of listeners and hours listened) for the first quarter of 2009. In brackets is the figure from one year ago.

1. CHED: 13.3 (13.3)

2. CBC Radio One: 9.2 (5.8)

3. The Bounce: 8.9 (7)

4. CISN: 8.8 (9.7)

5. EZ Rock: 8.5 (8.5)

6. CFCW: 6.9 (6.4)

7. The Bear: 6.8 (8.7)

8. Joe-FM: 5.1 (8.1)

9. Capital-FM: 4.8 (4.9 nine months ago - first ratings in new format)

10. Sonic: 4.6 (6.1)

11. K-97: 4.2 (4.5)

12. CKUA: 3.1 (3.3)

13. Magic 99: 2.9 (2.7)

14. CBC Radio 2: 2.7 (3.2)

15. The Team: 1.2 (1.8)

16. News i880: 1.1 (0.6 six months ago after format change)

Hicks on Six

Postby jon » Wed Apr 08, 2009 2:05 pm

From yesterday's Hicks on Six, and the referenced Blog posting:

CHANGING RADIO TASTES

Reflections on the latest radio ratings. Things have changed.

For most of the past decade, info/sports CHED led the pack, country CISN would be a close second, The Bear (rock), EZ-Rock (soft pop) and Joe-FM ('80s and '90s hits) would duke it out for third and fourth.

CHED still rules.

But now The Bounce and CBC 1 are muscling in.

The latest "ratings" for the first quarter of 2009, has CBC 1 in second and The Bounce in third.

CISN was pushed down to fourth.

Looks like the still-young Top-40 Bounce, with four strong quarters under its belt, has staying power.

CBC 1 needs more strong "books" to be totally legitimate. But no station is more deserving, given the great coverage of all things Edmontonian by its local shows.

With both CHED and CBC 1 doing so well, is there a hunger out there for more local news and features?

Some music formats are too crowded. K-97, The Bear and Sonic divide the hard rock market. On the softer side, Capital, Joe-FM, EZ Rock and Magic 99 battle for the same (large) group of listeners.

Meanwhile, The Bounce has the Top 40 under 30 age group all to itself.

CISN has only CFCW as a country music competitor. Those two seem to comfortably co-exist.

If you're interested in the top morning and afternoon drive shows from the latest BBM ratings, check out Today's Blog.

FM BURSTING AT THE SEAMS

Meanwhile, four new FM commercial pop/rock stations have been approved by the federal regulators.

John Yerxa's New 107 FM is aiming for a fall launch, targeting the younger end of the Bounce/Sonic audience.

The other three are all variations on rock 'n' pop - nobody seems to know when they go on air.

But once there, some 12 commercial stations will battle for a slice of the rock/pop music audience.

In the good ol' days, no matter how bad the station, the licence could be sold to another broadcast company for big bucks. Seems to me those salad days are gone. Too many stations, not enough ears.
