Remembering the '88 Olympics

Postby CKNF » Thu Feb 14, 2013 1:46 pm

As Calgarians celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1988 Winter Games, here's a clip of a 2&7 NEWSFIRST newscast from 25 years ago.

Neat little piece of television and Calgary history. :)

Hard to believe that was 25 years ago yesterday. One of the benefits of working at QR was that we had keys to access the roof of Palliser Square. What a great viewing area for the nightly fireworks
display at the Olympic Plaza! In today's world, that would never be allowed. The only people on the rooftop would be security personnel.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I loved the 88 Olympics, so many memories.

Gordon Lightfoot singing “Alberta Bound". Brian getting the silver - and so many other great story lines.

Calgary is a very welcoming City. Party hard and work hard, or at least it was, back in the day.

Give me my Sprung jacket and new boots and I’m good to go.

Greetings,
I was in Calgary for the 88 Olympics and really enjoyed them. Loved the pin trading with all the USA visitors and that was my first introduction to trading Olympic Pins and acquiring them. I still have a lot from Alberta radio stations and from Calgary too. Attended some of the events up near Canmore too. It was done well and I really enjoyed them plus the nightly Fireworks as RadioFan pointed out. Thats something Calgary and Alberta can be proud of still!

Take care everyone, Eldon

One of the highlights of the closing ceremonies was k.d.lang singing live and putting on a show for the world to see.
