Bellingham's KBAI flips to Classic Hits

Postby radiofan » Tue Aug 01, 2017 8:51 am

Saga Communications has flipped Liberal Talk 930 KBAI/98.9 K255DC Bellingham WA to Classic Hits “98.9 K-Bay”.

Through the 70s, 80s and 90s the station was Country KBFW.

What a shame and shades of Air America. If a liberal talk station can't subsist in Democrat-friendly Washington State, where can it? Good luck with a music format--the station's weak signal will hardly make for compelling fidelity.

Not sure why but the left has a hard time getting audience in radio or TV. Might be a lack of talented hosts, not sure. MSNBC has done a pretty good job as of late but it is mostly due to Trump and his antics and the Murdoch kids not running FOX as well as the old man.

Indeed, without Trump as an easy target to froth about they'd be even more broke.

If Vancouver Radio doesn’t fill the classic-oldies format abandoned by CISL, then KBAI might be wise to use ads or social media to attract Lower Mainlanders. Hiring Red Robinson to revive Red’s Diner (from a rented studio) might make inroads with classics-deprived Greater Vancouverites.

Great idea in principle Richard, however other than in the Lower Fraser Valley KBAI's signal is pretty much unlistenable anywhere else in the Lower Mainland (on both AM and FM). Saga might be able to pull off a small power increase on AM, but the FM translator is maxed out powerwise.

Perhaps in the Northeast and California, the two most liberal areas of the US (and perhaps in Portland, Oregon). Beyond that, most likely nowhere else as very few people have a taste for liberal talk radio (or liberal anything) nowadays.

Maybe Saga should have bought 1550 and dumped 930.

Exactly Ted. Especially seeing that 1550 recently sold for $1.00. Saga could have got it for a buck & a half. lol

I'm surprised they haven't added KBAI to one of KISM's HD channels.
