Alaska last night

There was music on 850 booming in beautifully last night; I assume that was KICY Nome. I immediately went listening for other Alaskans which I hadn't heard yet. KFQD 750 Anchorage was initially strong but slowly faded in and out a few times. It was relaying KTUU-TV news and weather (it's cold up there!) but I didn't get a clear ID until the second top of the hour. Often a 3 kHz het faded up nicely, presumably from JOIB Sapporo.

Listening to KFQD (and KXTG Portland), it was one of those times when fades happened so smoothly that I didn't realize that Anchorage had faded out and Portland had faded in and vice versa. Mention of "Special Olympics Alaska" and other details set me straight. It's fascinating and frustrating at the same time.

I tried for Barrow on 680 but gave up due to splatter from CBU 690. There was something there but it was likely KNBR, the usual station one finds there.

I wonder what tonight will bring...
