Harness saves man who fell from west Edmonton tower
By Brent Wittmeier, Edmonton Journal July 16, 2013 7:40 PM

EDMONTON - A man was likely saved by his harness after he fell while disassembling a ham radio tower above a west Edmonton home Tuesday evening.

A certified tower expert who had taken apart hundreds of towers, the man was trapped about 10 metres above ground shortly after 5 p.m. after he fell backward off a ham radio tower above a home on 149th Street just south of 107th Avenue, District Fire Chief Lorne Corbett said.

“He had on the proper harness, that’s what saved him. He also had his legs entangled in the tower itself. “When fire rescue came on scene, he was upside down and they had two firefighters go up and stabilize him and upright him. He was verbal at that point.”

Firefighters eventually escorted the man down using a bucket on a fire truck ladder. Though the man had blood on his face, a missing boot and “some very sore legs,” he was able to walk to the ambulance on his own power less than an hour after the fall, Corbett said.
