Woodward’s $1.49 day ended when the 100-year-old department chain was sold to Hudson’s Bay Company in 1993.

But the generosity of the company, founded by Charles Woodward in Vancouver in 1892, still lives on in the hearts of former staff.

“About 50 of us lunch together at the Norwood Legion every month,” says Hank Albarda, 80, who worked for Woodwards from 1958 to 1989.

“We were treated so well and benefits were so good that a tremendous spirit of camaraderie still exists among those who worked at the company’s six Edmonton stores.”

Larry Kozak, 72, who worked for the company for 35 years, says: “Sadly, our ranks have dwindled in recent years. But we contacted women from various stores who were still meeting and invited them to join us at Norwood Legion. Many have.”

Now, staff alumni are reaching out to former Woodard employees and want them to attend a May 18 reunion at the Woodvale Community Centre on Mill Woods Golf Course.

“We expect 300 guests,” says Kozak. “We have had inquiries from Calgary and from throughout B.C.”

Many female staff remember Charles N. “Chunky” Woodward, son of the company founder, flying in an orchid from Hawaii for female staffers on Mother’s Day.

Reunion tickets, $40, at 780-462-3223.
