The CRTC will be holding hearings in Vancouver beginning May 16 to hear applications for several proposed new Vancouver area stations based in Surrey on the AM and FM bands.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Two points of interest caught my attention.

(1) Three of the applications are for AM stations. All three are for 10,000 watts with multiple towers on new sites in Richmond and Surrey. On 600, 900 and 1650 KHz. At first glance, use of multiple towers on 1650 seems like an enormous waste of money, until I realized that was undoubtedly the only way they could get a decent night-time signal. Otherwise, they would very likely have been stuck with 1,000 watts at night, if they wanted to run non-directional, as that is how the frequencies were originally designed. Admittedly, the request for 1650 is only a third choice after two FM frequencies requested in the application by Ravinder Singh Pannu.

(2) The presence of some applicants who appear to be still involved in cross-border broadcasting on U.S. stations on 1550 and 1600. My reading of the CRTC ruling on the subject did not allow simply getting on-air hosts to cross the border and do their announcing from U.S. studios, as seems to still be the case.

Of the three AM apps, it looks like 600 will co-locate with CISL at the old CJOR site in Richmond.

900 is planning on a site not far from CKNW's site in Port Kells and 1650 is in the Colebrook Road area of South Surrey.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

I had always understood that the Application for 600 was based on using the old CJOR site, but the application filed currently with the CRTC only has three properties shown as potential transmitter sites with proof of availability to the applicant: 15380, 15260 and 15240 Westminster Hwy. in Richmond. The last two are actually already owned by the applicant.

15000-block Westminater Hwy is to the west of No. 7 Road, so just west of CHMB. Google Maps shows a bunch of deep, long small farmed plots immediately on the south side with few buildings in roughly the position of 15240/15260/15380.

The current C-ISL/old CKBD-CHRX-CJOR towers are on Nelson Road with the north side forming part of the 18000-block Westminster.
