The Applications Are In to Replace CKAV

The CRTC received five applications to replace one or more of the CKAV-FM frequencies across Canada. The four that include stations in the West are:

  1. CFWE-FM Edmonton's owners, which want a pair of similar but each locally programmed stations in Edmonton and Calgary that would focus entirely on Natives in the respective cities, programming Adult Contemporary music during the day. CFWE would continue with its Country format, focusing on all of the mostly Reserve areas covered by its many transmitters
  2. VMS Media Group also wants stations in Calgary and Edmonton, with programming split between Native and Ethnic
  3. Northern Native Broadcasting, which runs a station in Terrace, wants a station in Vancouver
  4. APTN wants all five of the CKAV-FM frequencies, with Native language programming solely in the language(s) spoken in each respective City of License, not the 100% simulcast national network that would have meant large blocks of programming in languages not understood by any of the potential listeners in each City
A Hearing is scheduled for March 27 in the Ottawa area, and comments are being accepted until February 7th.
