Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1970 ... Mashmakhan and "As The Years Go By" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Surprisingly deep lyrics for such an uptempo song. Normally, one expects Leonard Cohen-type dirge ballads for philosophical lyrics. But, like Mashmakhan, there's always a few acts who defy the formula. Sometimes, listeners can find themselves sashaying to provacative-even grisly--themes (take a careful listen to Timothy by The Buoys and then shudder).

Don't know whatever became of Mashmakhan founder Pierre Senecal. Over its history, the band did prove a source for April Wine rhythmn sections: drummer Gerry Mercer and bassist Steve Lang (recently deceased) made the jump to working with Myles Goldwyn.

I read this song was a big hit in Japan. The band toured there in support of the song. Odd that it was only a smash here in Canada and Japan. Didn't do much in the UK or US.

Indeed, Years reportedly sold a million copies in Japan versus 500K in the US and an impressive 100K up here. The single peaked at No 31 on Billboard, not shabby for a debut single by a weirdly named band from Quebec.

The associated information interests me more: 18 weeks is how long it lasted on Billboard.

That tells me that it was a regional hit in a number of U.S. markets, wandering its way through the Top 40 for four months or more at some stations, which usually means some Top 10 time, too.

Of course, it could mean it hit big and fizzled fast in a lot of markets, but at different times in that four month period.

Either way, it likely means that the song did well on a large minority of U.S. stations' Top 40 charts.

Just found some KJR Seattle charts from the era. The song was #1 for two weeks, September 25 and October 2, 1970.

For those of us KOL listeners, it peaked at #3 on September 11, 1970.
