Pop fans of a certain age probably only associate Edward Bear with lead vocalist Larry Evoy. After all, his grinning visage appeared in Rolling Stone magazine ads for the Church of Scientology. (Although the ad proclaimed "Why Is This Man Smiling?", Evoy later acrimoniously left the scifi cult.)
The original Edward Bear also featured Paul Weldon and guitarist Danny Marks. Their first single You Me and Mexico went Top 40 in the US. You Can't Deny It, written by Marks but mainly sung by Evoy, was the followup. It cooked, but to my ears the Bear really hit its stride with subsequent CanCon releases Fly Across The Sea and Masquerade. Evoy had new compatriots by the time Last Song and Close Your Eyes raced up Billboard and Cashbox.
Last I heard, Evoy is a country gentleman, raising horses. Don't know how life turned for Weldon, but Marks developed into an esteemed blues musician. Holger Peterson interviewed Danny not long ago on CBC Radio's Saturday Night Blues.
Oh yeah, an indie film recently hit screens. Can't remember it's name. Set in the 1970s it features a character sporting an Edward Bear t-shirt.
