Today's Can-Con 45 is from 1990 ... Alannah Myles and "Black Velvet" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Beautiful song by a stunning but possibly haughty woman. I never warmed to Alannah when watching her interviews. Maybe she was just painfully shy talking to journalists. And you have to feel sympathy that her father died months before her first and biggest album began its almost two-year ascent. Her dad was William Douglas Byles, a CAB Hall of Fame broadcaster.

Ms. Myles had a couple of more hits that did far better in Canada than the US where she is remembered as yet another one-hit wonder. But what a hit it was. With its homage-to-Elvis lyrics, Black Velvet remains right up there with Marc Cohn’s Walking In Memphis.

Both artists won Grammys: Myles took home Best Female Rock Performance in ‘92; Cohn Best New Artist In ‘93. Cohn had his Presley-imbued song covered a few years later...by Cher. Maybe it’s time for some enterprising artist to reinterpret Black Velvet.

Alannah Myles, despite the short-lived career, at least stayed healthy. Marc Cohn, by contrast, barely survived being shot in the head by a would-be carjacker near Denver in 2005.

Black Velvet was covered by country artist Robin Lee in 1990.
