Today's Can-Con 45 was a 1971 hit for Lighthouse ... "Hats Off (To The Stranger)" ...

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

What was it that Bono once said of Johnny Cash? Something like: “Next to him, most male singers sounded like sissies.” Using that yardstick, I’d say the late Bob McBride never sounded like a sissy...either fronting Lighthouse or on his own.

Until the Bobster joined in 1970, Lighthouse had been a rather aimless half big band/half experimental late ‘60s rock group. Their RCA albums pretty well tanked although they garnered good press for collaborating with Eastern ballet groups and symphonies.

Just like fellow horn tooters Blood Sweat & Tears—who added a husky-toned Torontonian (David Clayton Thomas) to their New York ranks—so Lighthouse blazed brightly once deep-voiced Bob McBride came aboard. They also acquired a new producer (Jimmy Ienner). In a twist, their US label (Evolution) was an arm of the Longines Watch Company. (Hats Off) To The Stranger got the ball rolling in Canada. Followup One Fine Morning established Lighthouse in the States.

Largely thanks to growling Bob McBride (RIP) who co-wrote this song. Grrrrr.
