Set in relative isolation on a Los Angeles hillside, a lavish house belonging to Burton Cummings is listed for sale with about a US$4.5 million asking price. Oddly, promotion photos posted by the listing realtor don’t show a room with a piano until about 44 images in.
After going solo from The Guess Who in 1976, Burton began spending at least half of each year in LA. Almost a decade ago, Burton passed qualifying exams and became a US citizen. Subsequently, following the death of his beloved mother Rhoda, he sold a longtime second home in Winnipeg. Burton apparently still owns a house in a rural area near Victoria.
Assuming Burton sells his California redoubt, where does he go next? Internet scuttlebutt suggests he’s already relocated to Canada, choosing Moose Jaw to settle in. Along with Moosamin, Medicine Hat and Terrace, Moose Jaw rated a lyrical mention all those decades back in The Guess Who’s Runnin’ Back To Saskatoon.
Shorter term, many Cummings fans remain perplexed that he apparently hasn’t been asked by the Winnipeg Jets to sing the Canadian and US national anthems at any home game in the first two rounds of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs. In a TSN clip posted May 7, Burton seemed eager to do the on-ice honours. Hopefully, Burton will get that chance If—and it may be a big if—the Jets defeat Nashville Predators in Game 7 and start round 3 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
