Stevie Wonder CKLG December 1967

The voices of CFUN and CKLG from the mid 1960's into the 1970s ... not full airchecks, but great pieces of Vancouver radio history.

Little Stevie Wonder (Grossman) hit the Vancouver airwaves in the fall of 1966 while
he was a grade 12 student at Kitsilano High! Stevie's screamin' style was something
new and unique. Here's some audio memories of Stevie from December 1967

Great (?)to hear that old "epiglotal push" again...lol. It made me think of KHJ's Sam Riddle when I heard it.The only pic of Steve I have ever seen is that head-shot from his 'LG tenure. Any others to be had ? Last I heard, he was in Montreal. Did he ever do anymore radio work? And..there is that old tale of him,the Paradise Valley/ Squamish Rock Festival, and an open bag of money getting airborne on the Lions Gate bridge. Any thoughts or updates?

FWIW: Steve was a student at Pt. Grey not Kitsilano.

I seem to think he went by Steve E. Wonder. rockradioscrapbook.com has an aircheck of him from around this same time period. He's referring to himself as "Steve Wonder" and the inflexion in the jingles lead me to believe that the "E" was a middle initial. Great high-energy jock!

Donovan ... I think the inflexion on the jingle is just an extended pause between the first and last name. After the first year, he did use Steve and Stevie, by 1969 he was Steve Grossman. I listened a lot,
and knew him and never heard or saw a Steve E refernce anywhere.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.
