Ed Murphy passes

Stories and info about those no longer involved in the industry

Postby Jack Bennest » Tue May 06, 2008 4:45 pm

To write a good biography for my pages (for some reason I don't have one for Ed) I will use all the info I sent to Hawthorn for his Globe and Mail piece, what is mentioned here and elsewhere in memories and info in Chuck Davis's book.

I must say I have access to the best pictures of Ed

Good pics

Postby johnsykes » Tue May 06, 2008 5:10 pm

Agreed re the pictures. But for the previous brickbats thrown my way....I recall the coverage in the Province alone was quite large and very detailed. Nothing was hidden that needed it to come out of the closet 28 years later....like hidden skeletons. At the time, I was deeply saddened that the guy was involved in something like that. Especially considering he and Jim Nielsen were co-workers previously. I'd like to think there were two Murphy's...one, the broadcaster...and two, the businessman who got caught with his bad judgement and paid the price.

So, take it for what it's worth......old news....nothing new.

Your reference to the Province - what story are you referring to?

Do you have it?

The Province

Postby johnsykes » Tue May 06, 2008 6:01 pm

No I don't. But I do recall the one to two pages of coverage....I had a subscription for the Province....so I do know it was in that paper. You should be able to find it in the Prov's archives with a bit of Bennest sleuthing reminiscent from the 70's

well its not in the electronic news archives that I have

I have given the news items that are from that period

Jim Bennie might be able to find them at the Library but only
if he had a date to look for

Looking through archives can make you go blind

When I read your post on it I thought you were talking about something recent.

The coverage of his death in the locals is abysmal

He'd probably have more success finding a date at one of those singles clubs.

Not a lot of women hang out at the library.

Not really

Postby johnsykes » Tue May 06, 2008 10:14 pm

Not recent at all.....that was what my rant was all about....some 28 or so years ago, the court case was widely reported in the Province newspaper....on TV, on radio etc. If some of you missed it, or were too young to know what it was all about, then so be it. I'm just damned mad that a guy who was so popular etc. 30+ years ago, dies and then some well-known blurr has to come back.

Mike Cleaver....you were not out here at that time, so I understand where you are coming from...and I respect your comment.

I hope you all are able to live your lives so lily white that this doesn't crop up when you pass away. I have some lulus I could pass on about some so-called radio personalities I knew. It won't get any further. Bugger this nonsense. Let sleeping dogs lie.

John, if no one's going to agree with you, I am.

This isn't about "history." This is about having some respect for the dead immediately after their demise.

Yes, the story was huge at the time but I can't remember when it was.

He can't pick up a book at the library, let alone anything else.

1970

A Member of Parlaiment, Judy LaMarsh wrote about the plaintiff as follows:

"A brash young radio reporter, named Ed Murphy (heartily detested by most of the Press Gallery and the members), had somehow learned that Maurice Lamontagne (then Secretary of State, and a long-time friend and adviser of the Prime Minister) had purchased furniture but had not paid for it."

Huh???

Postby johnsykes » Thu May 08, 2008 11:44 am

Hey Doggie, Freda Clark? wasn't she the old, wizzened you-know-what who worked in copy or something. If so, another funny about that pool party......she was walking around in underwear claiming someone tried to rape her. She couldn't remember if it was that night or thirty years before that.

So John, as an irate relative of the late Freda Clark, what`s the correct interval to wait after death before such a negative reference as you've posted above .. which DIDn`t rise to the level of a public scandal .. is okay?

Your criticism of Murphy's criminal history in this thread, smacks of hypocrisy.

Wasn't aware

Postby johnsykes » Thu May 08, 2008 12:56 pm

Had someone told me the lady had died, there would not have been any mention. Period. End of subject. I would surmise, knowing our honoured Top Dog, he wouldn't have mentioned the name before me either.

My apologies for any reference to Freda who I worked with as well.

I think info on Ed is fair game - The number of references to him
include:

Bannerman not getting along with him
Rafe calling him Lovable Ed etc
reflective of ego based show host who
in the end did not endure very long with his
early past totally unknown other than a reference
by Judy LaMarsh to the brash young reporter
I believe he was working for CRFB and was sent
to Ottawa prior to moving to Vancouver with
wife Betty and the six kids - five girls and one
young man.
