66 CFR Sign On 25 Years ago .. January 10, 1984

Hard to believe it was 25 years ago today (Jan 10) that Rawlco's 66 CFR [CFFR] in Calgary hit the air at 7:16AM. Here's the launch and first few minutes of Jerry Steen's first day on the Calgary airwaves. Ronald T Robinson is the voice of the sign on and also the voice on the produced promo (that was actually the sountrack of an animated CFR TV commercial).

66 CFR Sign On
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

Thank you for another great historical aircheck Radiofan.

Sounds like Joanne Johnson announcing that it's 7:15 a.m.

Nice to hear the launch of Calgary "Fun", "Family" and later "Flames" Radio . . .

1984 was a big year for radio in Calgary. In September, CFCN would become AM-106 and the end of CKXL as a Top 40 rocker loomed as 106 took a chunk of the teens and 66 took a chunk of the adults.

Sorry for forgetting to mention Joanne.

I have a longer version that I will post at some point, it includes the first full newscast with Bruce Seeley, Susan Booker's first C-O-N-C-E-R-N line feature, Dale Sande in sports and Joanne Johnson's first "On The Road" traffic report.

And anyone who was in Calgary that day might remember the fireworks at 7:16AM at Prince's Island Park to mark CFR's arrival.

To add to CKXL's woes, CHQR grabbed their PD Greg Haraldson who in turn snagged away longtime XL morning man Norm Edwards ...

Dale Sande? Wow. I thought Don Seel (sp?) was the first sports guy at CFR followed later by Tom Bricker.

Good point about 'QR - I couldn't remember if Greg Haraldson left before CFR's and AM-106's launches. I admit I've always wondered about the back story on his move.

Memories . . .

CON-CERN and 291-0123 (the "contact" line) versus 228-9999 for 'XL and 240-HITS for AM-106. And 249-CJ92 . . .
