CKNW 1977 TV Commercial

Postby radiofan » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:50 pm

To introduce it's "One To Turn To" jingle package and identity, CKNW ran a series of TV spots. Here's one of them (more to come)

CKNW TV Spot #1
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

What traffic offence did Mr. Madden commit in the filming of this commercial?

That traffic light looked to be quite yellow well before he went through it!

That's the way it looked to me.

Where's the cops when ya need them?

And that news cruiser, quite the machine compared to what they have now - and no pics of Phillip Till plastered on it. :P

Geez, I remember seeing that back then... and the mags on the newscruiser! Great stuff RF.... hope there's more to come! Guess the thing to do now is figure out the type of car. Pontiac something?? The headlights that are being washed appear to be those of a Volvo...who at 'NW had a mustard-coloured Volvo then?
BTW, Mr. Dog was wondering who the girl is at the end? A friend who used to work at NW suggests it might be Colleen Goodwin-Ryan ?

Great stuff. So there we have George Madden, with a Bobby Goldsboro haircut and a trench coat he borrowed from George Garrett. Funny stuff. If that doesn't get you to tune in to the Great 98, nothing will. God it must be awful to have video of yourself, that old, floating around. Good thing George is a good sport.

1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme - It was a great news cruiser. NW seemed to keep a car about a year. As I remember it we went through a lot of different ones – I will try to remember the different types that I drove. They were all contra with expensive and eye catching paint jobs.

The times back then may look funny....but - o what a feeling.

George was doing 9-5, Harry would have his car at home working 7-3. Jack would park his car along with George at the Chevron just off Granville at Seymour or Richards close to the Joe’s strip club the Penthouse. I never went eating the area at Italian restaurants. The second car parked was needed by a night evening man or someone on assignment. When Garrett was taken on as Investigator he got his own car and got to cover fires at 3am in Surrey….”Joanne could you wake up George – or has he bolted out the door yet”

I have retained my earlier sleepy eyed post below

to me. Joe Philiponi on Seymour.

The Volvo likely belonged to someome at BCTV or whoever produced the spots.

1977 would have been a few years early for it to be Colleen. Most likely someone hired from an agancy.

How convenient! Let me jog your memory. You'd go to Iacci's, Casa Capri for the finest pizza bread and salad, pasta dish et al, and they'd make the phone call across the street that some special visitors would be coming across the street. One of the Philliponi's ran the cab company off to the side. Those were great times. Of course, I just heard about it from some of the other guys who.......

Those were the days when Big Annie Fannie played the Penthouse! Oh, sorry, am I alone on this one? Surely Sandclan frequented the Penthouse in the Golden Days? Or, am I wrong?

Sandyman, I probably saw you there too! Nothing like the beer soaked terrycloth table cloths to say "waiter, load it up, it's last call" Those were the days, my friend.
